Creamy Coleslaw Recipe
If you’re looking for that mouthwatering coleslaw recipe just like mother used to make, then look no further than this creamy coleslaw recipe! I found this and simply had to try it because it looked so tasty! Now, I’m not always a big fan of coleslaw—sometimes it depends on who made it, where it comes from, what flavors they added, etc. My tastebuds can be a little bit finicky when it comes to the ‘slaw.
But, when I made this recipe, I was immediately surprised at how creamy and delicious it was! While some coleslaws can end up being a little runny and bland, this one was packed full of flavors and was the perfect combination of creamy and crunchy, without being runny. I absolutely loved it!
I even got my kids to try a few bites, which they actually enjoyed. Typically my kiddos are not huge vegetable fans, and especially not big fans of vegetable “salads,” so getting them to try coleslaw was a bit of a stretch. But, it actually worked out for them! They even asked for a second helping at dinner, which made my entire day.
We paired our coleslaw with some good old fashioned comfort food: corn, chicken and gravy, although you could pair it with practically any meal you want. As you can imagine, this coleslaw is the perfect option for a family dinner or big gathering, and it works well during the warm months of summer into the cooler months of fall. While I don’t typically eat coleslaw during the winter, it could even work great then too!
If you’re a big fan of coleslaw—or even if you’re not—give this recipe a try and see how you enjoy the unique flavor combination. See the recipe below for my creamy coleslaw and try making it for your family. Let me know what you like or don’t like about it, or how you change it up to better fit your tastebuds. Who knows, maybe your kids will love it even more than mine!

TOP QUESTIONS I GET ASKED ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
Can coleslaw be frozen?
Well…. yes and no. If coleslaw does not contain mayonnaise, it can be frozen. However, if the coleslaw does contain mayonnaise, the answer is no. Mayonnaise doesn’t tend to freeze well, so when coleslaw contains mayonnaise, it separates after being frozen, and you end up with a watery dressing. The coleslaw will lose much of its crunch and flavorings. However, coleslaw with an oil or vinegar-based dressing is the best-suited for freezing. So if you intend on freezing your coleslaw to use for later, I would recommend switching out the mayonnaise.
Can you eat coleslaw while pregnant?
Having been pregnant before, I know there are certain foods which do not pair well with pregnancy. Apparently, pregnancy suppresses your immune system because of the hormone changes going on within your body. For this reason, I would tread lightly when it comes to coleslaw. Coleslaw is perfectly fine to eat while pregnant if it’s made from fresh vegetables and fruit, and you know where the ingredients come from. For instance, if you’re making this homemade recipe, you would be in the clear.
However, mayonnaise can sometimes present a problem if it is made from unpasteurized raw eggs. This provides the perfect environment for bacterial growth, which can create a general health risk to women who are pregnant. Generally speaking, I would say yes you can try this recipe out, but be sure to check with your doctor beforehand.
Where did coleslaw originate?
The term “coleslaw” comes from the Dutch word “koolsla” which means cabbage salad. Though coleslaw was probably consumed in its original form as early as the ancient Romans, the coleslaw we know today originated during the 18th century in Netherlands, with the invention of mayonnaise. And I’m definitely glad it was invented, so I could share this recipe with you today!
