This is a single-layer peanut butter and pumpkin cake made entirely from dog-safe ingredients — whole wheat flour, pumpkin puree, applesauce, eggs, and natural peanut butter, topped with a Greek yogurt and peanut butter frosting. It takes 40 minutes start to finish and works just as well baked in muffin tins if you need to feed more than one dog at a party. The honest reason to make it: store-bought dog birthday treats are expensive and often full of ingredients you can’t pronounce, and this one uses things you likely already have.

Why this recipe works

Two things keep this cake from turning into a dense, gummy puck. First, the wet ingredients — applesauce, pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs — are whisked together separately before they touch the flour. That step distributes moisture evenly so you don’t end up overworking the batter trying to break up dry pockets. Second, the instruction to stir until just combined matters more here than in most cakes. Whole wheat flour develops gluten quickly, and overmixing produces a tough, chewy crumb that’s hard for smaller dogs to eat comfortably. Stop stirring the moment you can’t see dry flour.

Shopping notes

  • Pumpkin puree: The label must say 100% pumpkin. Pumpkin pie filling contains added sugar and spices — nutmeg in particular can be harmful to dogs. They look nearly identical on the shelf, so read the label every time.
  • Peanut butter: Check the ingredient list, not just the front of the jar. Xylitol (also listed as “birch sugar” or “sugar alcohol”) is toxic to dogs and appears in some natural and reduced-sugar peanut butters. A safe jar has one or two ingredients: peanuts, and maybe salt.
  • Greek yogurt for the frosting: Full-fat, plain, unsweetened only. Flavored yogurts contain sweeteners and sometimes xylitol. Skip the garnish of dog biscuits on top — not worth the extra dish, and the frosting looks fine on its own.
  • Applesauce: Unsweetened, with no added sweeteners of any kind. Single-ingredient applesauce is the safest pick.

Troubleshooting

  • Cake sticks to the pan: Coconut oil alone isn’t always enough, especially with whole wheat flour. Use parchment paper on the bottom of the pan in addition to greasing the sides — this guarantees clean removal every time.
  • Center is still wet at 25 minutes: Oven temperatures vary. Leave it in for 3–5 more minutes and test again. The toothpick should come out completely clean, not just mostly clean — underbaked cake can cause stomach upset.
  • Frosting is too runny to spread: Greek yogurt brands differ in thickness. If yours is loose, stir in an extra tablespoon of peanut butter or refrigerate the mixed frosting for 15 minutes before spreading.
  • Cake crumbles when you try to slice it: It wasn’t fully cooled. This cake needs to reach room temperature all the way through before you frost or cut it — rushing that step is the most common reason it falls apart.
  • Baking multiple batches of cupcakes for a group: Rotate the muffin tin halfway through baking if your oven runs hot in the back. Check at 15 minutes but don’t be surprised if they need the full 18.

Leftovers and make-ahead

Because the frosting contains Greek yogurt, the finished cake needs to be refrigerated within two hours of serving. Covered in the fridge, it keeps well for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze unfrosted cake slices or individual cupcakes in an airtight container for up to one month — wrap each piece separately so you can pull out one at a time. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then add fresh frosting before serving. If you’re making this ahead for a dog party, bake the cake or cupcakes the day before, store them unfrosted in the fridge, and mix the frosting the morning of the event. That approach keeps the texture better than frosting and refrigerating overnight.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • 9-inch round cake pan
  • Oven
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • cooling rack

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour organic preferred
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder aluminum-free
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce ensure no added sugars or xylitol
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree 100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix
  • ¼ cup natural peanut butter unsalted and unsweetened, xylitol-free
  • 2 large eggs cage-free if possible

For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt full-fat, unsweetened
  • ¼ cup natural peanut butter as above

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with a little coconut oil or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and baking powder until fully mixed.
  • In another bowl, combine applesauce, pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs. Whisk until smooth and well-integrated.
  • Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Don’t overmix—the batter should be thick but uniform.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Smooth out the top with a spatula.
  • Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is firm and lightly browned.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer it onto a cooling rack. Let it cool completely before frosting.
  • For the frosting, mix the Greek yogurt and peanut butter together until creamy and spreadable.
  • Once the cake is cool, spread the frosting evenly on top and decorate with dog-safe treats if desired.

Notes

  • To make the cake grain-free, substitute oat flour or finely ground almond flour.
  • Always check ingredient labels for xylitol and artificial sweeteners, which are toxic to dogs.
  • You can bake this in muffin tins for pup-sized cupcakes—reduce bake time to 15–18 minutes.

Your questions, answered

Can I make this recipe as cupcakes instead of one cake?

Yes — divide the batter evenly into a standard 12-cup muffin tin and bake at 350°F for 15 to 18 minutes. This is actually the more practical option if multiple dogs are celebrating, since each dog gets their own portion without you having to slice and divide.

Is this cake safe for all dogs, or are there exceptions?

This recipe is made from ingredients that are generally recognized as safe for healthy adult dogs, but dogs with pancreatitis, diabetes, or grain sensitivities may need adjustments — check with your vet first. Peanut butter is high in fat, so dogs prone to weight gain should have a smaller portion.

How much of this cake should I actually give my dog?

Treat it like any rich treat: a modest slice or one cupcake is plenty for a medium to large dog, and a smaller portion for small breeds. The whole cake is 1,478 calories, so it’s meant to be shared or saved across multiple servings, not eaten in one sitting.

Can I double the recipe to make a two-layer cake?

Yes — double all ingredients and bake two separate 9-inch rounds at the same time if your oven fits them. Stack with a thin layer of frosting between the layers once both are fully cooled. Keep in mind the total calorie count doubles, so portion sizes should stay the same.

What can I use instead of whole wheat flour?

The recipe card notes oat flour or finely ground almond flour as grain-free substitutes. Oat flour produces a texture closest to the original; almond flour makes a slightly denser, moister crumb and may need an extra minute or two in the oven.

Can humans eat this cake too?

Technically yes — all the ingredients are human-safe — but it’s not sweet or salty enough to be enjoyable for most people. It’s formulated around what’s good for dogs, not what tastes good to us, so manage expectations if you try a bite.
