This is a simmered, spiced punch made from cranberry juice, fresh orange juice, brown sugar, and whole spices — ready in 35 minutes and completely non-alcoholic. It serves eight, holds well in the fridge, and reheats without any fuss, which makes it genuinely useful for holiday gatherings rather than just another drink you make once. A splash of rum or bourbon works for adults if you want it.

Substitutions that actually work

  • Star anise: The one ingredient people skip or can’t find. You can leave it out entirely — the punch is still good. If you want a similar depth, add an extra cinnamon stick instead.
  • Light brown sugar: Dark brown sugar works and adds a slightly stronger molasses note. Honey (about 3 tablespoons) also dissolves cleanly and gives a mild floral sweetness.
  • Fresh orange juice: Carton orange juice is fine here. The spices are doing a lot of the work, so the difference between fresh-squeezed and good store-bought is small.
  • Cranberry juice: Use 100% juice, not a cranberry cocktail blend — cocktail blends are already sweetened and will make the punch too sweet before you even add sugar.

The technique that matters

Keep the heat low once the liquid is in the pot. A hard boil drives off the bright citrus notes and pulls bitter compounds out of the cloves and orange peel faster than a gentle simmer does. You want the surface barely moving — small bubbles, not a rolling boil. The 20-to-25-minute simmer window matters too: under 15 minutes and the spices haven’t fully opened up; past 30 minutes and the cloves start to turn sharp. Pull it off the heat as soon as the kitchen smells strongly of cinnamon and orange together. That’s your cue, and it’s more reliable than the clock.

Troubleshooting

  • Punch tastes bitter: The cloves steeped too long or the heat was too high. Strain immediately and stir in a small amount of extra brown sugar — about a teaspoon at a time — to balance it out.
  • Too tart even after adding sugar: Add a splash more orange juice rather than more sugar. It softens the cranberry sharpness without making the whole thing taste like a sweetened drink.
  • Spice flavor is barely there: Your whole spices may be old. Dried spices lose potency over time. Add one more cinnamon stick and let it simmer an extra five minutes before straining.
  • Punch is cloudy after straining: That’s normal — it comes from the fruit solids and orange peel. It doesn’t affect flavor. If you want a clearer punch for a punch bowl presentation, strain it a second time through a coffee filter set inside your mesh strainer.
  • Reheated batch tastes flat: Stir in a small squeeze of fresh orange juice just before serving. Heat dulls citrus over time, and a little fresh juice brings it back quickly.

Keeping and reheating

Once strained and cooled, the punch keeps in a sealed container in the fridge for up to four days — and honestly it tastes a little better on day two once the flavors have settled. Reheat it on the stovetop over low heat; don’t microwave a full batch because it heats unevenly. Skip the garnish when storing — not worth the extra dish, and the fresh cranberries get waterlogged anyway. Add them fresh right before serving if you want them. This punch does not freeze well; the citrus turns slightly off once thawed. For a party, make it the day before, refrigerate it, and reheat it low and slow in the same pot while guests arrive.

This festive Spiced Cranberry Orange Holiday Punch is a warming, citrus-kissed drink perfect for winter gatherings. Infused with cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, it carries the nostalgic aromas of the season in every sip. This non-alcoholic version is family-friendly, though it can be elevated for adults with a splash of rum or bourbon. Inspired by traditional spiced punches from European holiday markets, this beverage brings coziness and celebratory cheer to your table.

Equipment

  • Large saucepan or pot
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Ladle (for serving)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cranberry juice (100% juice, unsweetened preferred) choose high-quality juice for best tartness and color
  • 2 cups fresh orange juice freshly squeezed preferred for vibrant citrus notes
  • 1 cup water used to simmer the spices gently and balance sweetness
  • ⅓ cup light brown sugar adds subtle molasses flavor—adjust for sweetness preference
  • 2 sticks cinnamon whole sticks preferred for infusion
  • 5 whole cloves adds warming spice; avoid oversteeping
  • 2 pods star anise gives a subtle licorice note and aromatic depth
  • 1 medium orange, thinly sliced leave the peel on for visual and aromatic appeal
  • ½ cup fresh cranberries for garnish and mild acidity—optional but visually festive

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cranberry juice, orange juice, and water. Stir in the brown sugar until mostly dissolved.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Gently place the sliced orange and fresh cranberries into the mixture.
  • Bring to a simmer over medium heat (about 160°F/71°C). Avoid boiling to prevent bitterness from the spices.
  • Simmer the mixture for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally. You'll notice the aroma deepen and citrus oils release from the peels.
  • Remove pot from the heat and strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove the spices and solids.
  • Serve warm in mugs, or let it cool and pour into a festive punch bowl over ice if serving chilled.

Notes

  • Use whole spices for a more refined, rounded infusion without sediment.
  • To make it alcoholic, add 1/4 cup dark rum or whiskey to the pot after removing from heat.
  • If short on time, use a pre-mixed spice blend bag, though the flavor will be less vibrant.
  • For a clear punch, strain twice and use cheesecloth over the strainer.

FAQ

Can I make this punch the night before a party?

Yes — making it ahead is actually the best approach. Strain it, let it cool, and refrigerate it in a sealed pitcher or pot overnight. Reheat it gently on the stovetop the next day; the flavor is fully developed and you have one less thing to manage when guests arrive.

Can I make this in a slow cooker to keep it warm during a party?

Yes, with one adjustment. Do the initial simmer on the stovetop first, then strain it and transfer it to the slow cooker set on warm or low. Skipping the stovetop simmer and trying to infuse the spices in a slow cooker takes much longer and the results are inconsistent.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

How do I scale this up for a larger crowd?

The recipe doubles and triples cleanly. Keep the spice quantities proportional but taste before you strain — a larger batch sometimes needs slightly less clove, so pull one or two out after 15 minutes and taste as you go.
