Fresh Basil and Gin: A Mediterranean Cocktail Delight

The Basil Smash is a gin cocktail built on three things: fresh basil, lemon juice, and simple syrup. It takes about 10 minutes to make one, and the components scale up easily if you want to prep ahead for a group. The honest reason to make it is that it tastes genuinely fresh without requiring any special equipment or hard-to-find ingredients.

The technique that matters

Muddling is the step most people get wrong. Press the basil leaves firmly enough to bruise them and release their oils, but stop before they shred into green confetti — over-muddled basil turns bitter and leaves your finished drink looking murky. The second thing that actually matters is double-straining. A standard cocktail strainer catches ice; a fine-mesh strainer catches the fine basil particles that make the drink taste grassy rather than clean. Use both, every time. Skipping the fine-mesh strainer is the single most common reason a homemade Basil Smash tastes rougher than it should.

Ingredient notes

  • Gin: A London dry style works well here because its juniper and citrus botanicals play nicely with the lemon. Avoid heavily floral or spiced gins on your first attempt — they can fight with the basil rather than complement it.
  • Simple syrup: A 1:1 ratio (equal parts sugar and water, stirred until dissolved) is all you need. Make a larger batch and keep it in a sealed jar in the fridge — it holds for up to four weeks and is useful across a wide range of drinks and baking projects.
  • Basil: Standard sweet basil is the right call. Thai basil has an anise edge that changes the flavor profile significantly, so save it for cooking.
  • Lemon juice: Bottle juice will not do the same job here. Fresh-squeezed is one of only four ingredients, so it matters.

Storage and reheating

You can batch the non-basil components ahead of time. Combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a sealed jar or bottle in the correct ratios and refrigerate for up to three days — the lemon juice stays bright for about 48 hours before it starts to dull, so sooner is better. Do not muddle and store basil in advance; it oxidizes quickly and will turn the mixture dark and slightly bitter within a few hours. When you are ready to serve, add fresh basil to the shaker, muddle, pour in your pre-mixed liquid plus ice, shake, and strain as normal. Simple syrup on its own keeps in the fridge for up to four weeks in a clean, sealed container. There is nothing to freeze or reheat here.

If something goes sideways

  • The drink tastes bitter: The basil was over-muddled. Next time, use lighter pressure and stop as soon as you smell the herb. You cannot fix this batch, but adding a small extra measure of simple syrup can soften the edge slightly.
  • The drink is too sour: Lemon size and ripeness vary a lot. If 30 ml of juice tastes sharp in the finished drink, add simple syrup in small increments — a few drops at a time — and taste as you go rather than pouring in a full extra measure.
  • The drink looks cloudy or green-flecked: The fine-mesh strainer was skipped or clogged. Pour the drink back through a clean fine-mesh strainer over a fresh glass of ice. It will not be perfect, but it will be noticeably cleaner.
  • The drink is watery: The shaking time was too long, or the ice was already melting before it went into the shaker. Use ice straight from the freezer and keep shaking to around 15 seconds. A watery batch cannot be fixed, but you can note the ratio and adjust next time.
  • The garnish sprig wilts immediately: Skip the garnish — not worth the extra prep if your basil is not very fresh. The aroma is already in the glass.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml gin Preferably a dry gin with herbal notes.
  • 30 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice From one medium organic lemon for optimum flavor.
  • 15 ml simple syrup Use homemade if possible, in a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water.
  • 8 pcs fresh basil leaves Choose bright, aromatic, and unblemished leaves.
  • 1 cup ice Use crushed ice for a more refreshing texture.

Instructions

  • Place the basil leaves in a shaker and gently muddle to release their oils. Be cautious not to tear them to ensure a smooth flavor profile.
  • Add gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ice to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until chilled.
  • Double strain the mixture into a chilled rocks glass filled with fresh ice using a fine mesh strainer to catch any larger basil fragments.
  • Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil, gently slapping the leaves against your wrist first to release their aroma and enhance the sensory experience.

Notes

For a sweeter variation, add a splash of elderflower liqueur. To simplify, swap simple syrup with honey syrup made by warming equal parts honey and water.

Your questions, answered

Can I make a pitcher of Basil Smashes for a group?

Yes, but muddle the basil in batches in the shaker rather than trying to muddle it all at once in the pitcher. Combine your pre-measured gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a pitcher, then muddle fresh basil in small portions, shake with ice, double-strain into the pitcher, and repeat until you have the volume you need.

What can I do with leftover simple syrup?

It keeps in the fridge for up to four weeks and works in any cocktail or mocktail that calls for a sweetener. It also dissolves cleanly into iced tea or lemonade, which granulated sugar will not do.

Can I make this without alcohol?

Yes. Replace the gin with a non-alcoholic spirit or simply use a splash of tonic water and a little extra lemon juice to maintain the bitter-bright balance. The basil, lemon, and syrup still carry the drink.

Do I need a cocktail shaker, or can I use something else?

A mason jar with a tight lid works fine for shaking. You will still need a fine-mesh strainer for double-straining — a small kitchen sieve does the job.

My basil is starting to wilt — is it still usable?

Slightly wilted basil is fine as long as it still smells strongly of basil and has no dark, slimy spots. Submerge the stems in a glass of cold water for 15 minutes before using and the leaves will often perk back up.

Can I use dried basil instead of fresh?

No. Dried basil does not muddle and has a completely different, much weaker flavor that will not work here. Fresh basil is not optional in this recipe.
