A Fuzzy Navel is just two ingredients — peach schnapps and fresh orange juice — shaken with ice and done in five minutes. It’s sweet, cold, and genuinely easy to pull off on a busy evening when you want something a little more interesting than a beer. The ratio here keeps it balanced rather than cloying, which is the main thing that separates a good one from a forgettable one.

What makes this version work

Two things matter here. First, shaking rather than just stirring: ten to fifteen seconds in a shaker with ice properly chills the drink and slightly dilutes it, which softens the sweetness of the schnapps without watering it down. Second, the equal ratio — 1.5 oz schnapps to 1.5 oz orange juice — keeps neither ingredient from overpowering the other. Use freshly squeezed orange juice if you can; the difference in brightness is noticeable, and it takes about thirty seconds to squeeze one orange. Skip the garnish — not worth the extra dish.

Common problems and fixes

  • Too sweet, almost syrupy: Your schnapps brand may run sweeter than average. Add an extra half-ounce of orange juice to bring it back into balance, or squeeze in a few drops of fresh lemon juice to cut through.
  • Drink is watery by the time you finish it: You strained it over ice that was already partially melted. Use fresh ice in the glass after straining, not the ice left sitting on the counter.
  • Schnapps flavor is barely there: Low-proof peach schnapps (some brands sit around 15% ABV) can get lost. Check the label — anything under 20% ABV may need a slightly larger pour to register.
  • Shaker leaking or hard to open: The shaker seals tighter when the contents are very cold. Run the joint briefly under warm water to release it — don’t force it or you’ll wear the drink.
  • Drink tastes flat and dull: Bottled or carton orange juice is the likely culprit. It’s pasteurized and often has added sweeteners that muddy the flavor. Fresh-squeezed is the fix.

Smart swaps

  • Peach schnapps: This is a standard liqueur stocked at most grocery stores with a liquor section. DeKuyper and Archers are common options. Quality varies — mid-range is fine, but avoid the very cheapest bottles, which can taste artificial.
  • Orange juice: Navel oranges work well here because they’re reliably sweet. Blood orange juice makes a visually striking version with a slightly tart edge. If you only have carton OJ, use it — just know fresh is noticeably better.
  • Adding a splash of lemon-lime soda or prosecco: Pour it directly into the glass after straining rather than into the shaker, or you’ll lose all the fizz immediately.
  • Non-alcoholic version: Swap the schnapps for peach nectar (found in the juice aisle). The result is sweeter and thicker, so reduce to 1 oz and top with a splash of sparkling water to lighten it up.

Make-ahead notes

You can pre-mix the schnapps and orange juice up to 24 hours ahead and keep it in a sealed jar or pitcher in the fridge. Don’t add ice until you’re ready to shake and serve — the mixture will dilute and go flat if it sits on ice. If you’re making a batch for a group, multiply the quantities, refrigerate the base, then shake individual portions over ice to order. Fresh-squeezed juice holds well for about a day in the fridge before it starts to lose its brightness, so squeeze it the same day if you can.

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • highball glass

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Peach schnapps Preferably high-quality peach schnapps for superior flavor
  • 1.5 oz Orange juice Freshly squeezed for optimal freshness
  • 1 slice Orange For garnish

Instructions

  • Begin by filling a cocktail shaker with ice.
This will help to chill and lightly dilute the cocktail, enhancing its refreshing qualities.
  • Measure 1.5 oz (45 ml) of peach schnapps using a jigger and pour it over the ice.
Opt for a high-quality peach schnapps to ensure a robust and authentic peach flavor.
  • Add 1.5 oz (45 ml) of freshly squeezed orange juice to the shaker.
Fresh juice elevates the cocktail with its natural zest and brightness.
  • Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the exterior feels ice-cold.
This step not only combines the flavors but properly chills them as well.
  • Strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with fresh ice to preserve the drink's crispness.
  • Garnish with a slice of orange on the rim of the glass.
This adds a pop of color and an extra hint of citrus aroma.

Notes

  • For a delightful twist, consider adding a splash of lemon-lime soda or prosecco for effervescence.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace the schnapps with peach nectar.

FAQ

Do I need a cocktail shaker, or can I just stir it?

You can stir it, but shaking gives you a noticeably colder, slightly better-diluted drink. If you don’t have a shaker, combine the ingredients over ice in the glass and stir for about 20 seconds — it works fine, just not quite as crisp.

What kind of peach schnapps should I buy?

A mid-range bottle is all you need — DeKuyper and Archers are both widely available and work well here. Avoid the cheapest options, which can have an artificial peach flavor that doesn’t mix cleanly with fresh juice.

Can I make a big batch for a party?

Yes — multiply the schnapps and orange juice by however many servings you need and refrigerate the mixture in a pitcher. Shake or stir individual portions over ice when serving so each drink stays cold and properly chilled.

Is this very alcoholic?

No — peach schnapps is a low-proof liqueur, typically 15–20% ABV, and the drink uses only 1.5 oz of it. It’s on the lighter end of cocktails, which is part of why it’s easy to drink.

Can I use frozen orange juice concentrate?

It will work in a pinch, but the flavor is noticeably flatter and often too sweet. If that’s what you have, reconstitute it as directed and taste before mixing — you may want slightly less than 1.5 oz.

What’s the difference between a Fuzzy Navel and a Hairy Navel?

A Hairy Navel adds vodka to the original two ingredients, which increases the alcohol content and adds a drier edge. Use about 1 oz of vodka alongside the schnapps and orange juice if you want to try it.
