Three Dots and a Dash: A Victorious Tiki Cocktail

Three Dots and a Dash is a classic tiki cocktail built on aged rum, fresh lime, and a handful of specialty syrups — shaken together in about ten minutes. The name comes from Morse code: three dots and a dash spell out V, as in victory. It’s a genuinely well-balanced drink that’s worth making at home, especially if you already have a bottle of rum sitting around.

The short version of why this works

Two things matter most here. First, the double-rum base — aged rum for depth and overproof rum for backbone — gives the drink real structure without needing a long ingredient list to prop it up. Second, shaking hard and long enough actually matters. You’re not just chilling the liquid; you’re diluting it slightly, which softens the alcohol and lets the lime and falernum come through clearly. A lazy ten-second shake will leave the drink tasting sharp and boozy. Shake until the outside of the shaker is genuinely cold and frosty, then strain over crushed ice.

Smart swaps

  • Falernum: This is the one ingredient most people don’t have. The recipe card suggests ginger syrup as a substitute — that works. You can also use a small amount of orgeat (almond syrup) plus a squeeze of extra lime to approximate falernum’s flavor profile, though it won’t be identical.
  • Orange curaçao: Cointreau or triple sec are fine stand-ins. They’re drier and a touch sweeter, so start with a little less if you’re sensitive to sweetness.
  • Honey syrup: The recipe card tells you to mix equal parts honey and hot water — do this first, before you do anything else, so it has time to cool. Cold honey won’t dissolve properly in the shaker.
  • Aged rum: Martinique rhum agricole is the traditional choice and worth seeking out, but a good Barbadian or Haitian aged rum works well too.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using bottled lime juice: This drink has a full ounce of lime juice and nowhere to hide. Bottled juice tastes flat and slightly bitter here. Squeeze fresh limes — it takes two minutes and makes a noticeable difference.
  • Skipping the crushed ice: Regular ice cubes work in a pinch, but crushed ice isn’t just aesthetic. It chills faster and provides the right level of dilution as you drink. A zip-lock bag and a rolling pin gets you there without any special equipment.
  • Pouring everything in at once without measuring: This recipe has seven liquid components. Eyeballing them throws off the balance quickly, especially with the falernum and bitters. Use a jigger.
  • Forgetting to pre-make the honey syrup: Adding straight honey to a cold shaker means it clumps at the bottom and never fully incorporates. Make the syrup ahead — even five minutes ahead — and it mixes in cleanly.
  • Overcomplicating the garnish: Three cherries on a skewer is enough — skip the clove-decorated pineapple spear, it’s not worth the extra prep for a drink you’re making at home.

Make-ahead notes

The honey syrup keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to two weeks, so make a larger batch and you’re set for multiple rounds. The full cocktail doesn’t hold well once shaken — the lime juice starts to lose its brightness and the carbonation from dilution dissipates — so mix it to order. If you’re making this for a group, you can pre-measure and combine all the spirits and syrups (everything except the lime juice) in a pitcher and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add the fresh lime juice and shake each drink individually just before serving.

Ingredients

Cocktail Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Aged Rum Preferably Martinique Rhum for the authentic touch.
  • 0.5 oz Overproof Rum Adds a robust depth, such as a high-quality Jamaican rum.
  • 0.5 oz Orange Curaçao For a touch of citrus sweetness.
  • 0.5 oz Honey Syrup Equal parts honey and hot water, mixed.
  • 0.25 oz Falernum A spiced syrup with hints of almond, ginger, and lime.
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice Freshly squeezed for best results.
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters To add complexity to the flavor.

Garnish

  • 3 clove Maraschino Cherries Represents the 'three dots'.
  • 1 piece Pineapple Spear Represents the 'dash'. Optionally replace with an intricately cut clove-decorated spear for a visual treat.

Instructions

  • Gather all of your liquid ingredients and pour them into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  • Vigorously shake the mixture until the shaker feels ice-cold to your touch, signaling it has sufficiently chilled the blend.
  • Strain the cocktail into a traditional tiki mug or a glass filled with crushed ice to maintain the cold temperature and enhance dilution.
  • Garnish the drink with three maraschino cherries speared onto a skewer, followed by a pineapple spear.

Notes

If you lack falernum, substitute with a light ginger syrup for a different, yet delightful twist. For a smokier finish, consider adding a charcoal-dusted rim to your glass before pouring the cocktail.

Your questions, answered

What does falernum taste like and do I really need it?

Falernum is a sweet syrup with almond, lime, and ginger notes — it’s what gives tiki cocktails that distinctive spiced-tropical flavor. You can skip it or substitute, but the drink will taste noticeably simpler without it; it’s worth ordering a bottle online if you plan to make tiki cocktails more than once.

Can I use white rum instead of aged rum?

Technically yes, but the drink loses a lot of its character. Aged rum brings molasses and vanilla notes that white rum doesn’t have, and those flavors are doing real work in this recipe. If aged rum isn’t available, a gold rum is a better middle ground than white.

What glass should I use if I don’t have a tiki mug?

Any tall glass works fine — a highball glass or even a large mason jar does the job. The important thing is that it holds enough crushed ice to keep the drink cold; the vessel itself doesn’t affect the flavor.

How strong is this cocktail?

It’s on the stronger side — two ounces of rum total, including overproof rum, which typically runs 57–75% ABV. The lime juice and syrups balance it well, so it doesn’t taste as strong as it is; just be aware of that going in.
