This is a blended strawberry margarita made with real fruit, fresh lime juice, blanco tequila, triple sec, and simple syrup — ready in five minutes with no cooking involved. The honest reason to make it instead of reaching for a mix: it actually tastes like strawberries, and the lime-to-sweet ratio is calibrated so it drinks like a cocktail rather than a fruit slushie.

The short version of why this works

Two things make this recipe succeed where others fall flat. First, blending on high for a full 30–45 seconds isn’t optional — it’s what turns the ice and fruit into a smooth, pourable slush rather than a chunky, uneven mess. Second, the simple syrup is kept at just half an ounce, which lets the natural sweetness of ripe strawberries do the work without tipping the drink into dessert territory. Get those two things right and the balance takes care of itself.

Shopping notes

  • Blanco (silver) tequila: This is the clear, unaged style. Reposado or añejo tequilas have been aged in oak barrels, which adds vanilla and caramel notes that fight with the strawberry. Blanco keeps the fruit front and center. Any mid-range bottle works fine — you don’t need to spend a lot.
  • Triple sec: This is an orange-flavored liqueur. Cointreau is the well-known version, but standard triple sec from any liquor store costs less and works perfectly here. Grand Marnier is a common substitution but has a heavier, brandy-based flavor that slightly changes the drink.
  • Simple syrup: The recipe uses a 1:1 ratio (equal parts sugar and water, stirred until dissolved). You can buy it pre-made, but it takes about two minutes to make at home and keeps in the fridge for weeks. There’s a full guide on making simple syrup here if you need it.
  • Coarse salt: Kosher salt or coarse sea salt both work for the rim. Fine table salt clumps and goes gummy on a wet glass — avoid it.

What can go wrong

  • The drink comes out watery: This usually means the strawberries were very large and released a lot of liquid during blending. Use the half-cup measurement rather than counting berries, and if the result looks thin, add a small handful of extra ice and blend again for 10 seconds.
  • The salt rim falls off into the drink: The glass rim needs to be wet enough to grip the salt but not dripping. Run a cut lime wedge around the edge — just one pass — then dip immediately. If the glass is too wet, the salt dissolves before you pour.
  • It tastes too tart: Lime size varies a lot, and one large lime can easily give you more than an ounce of juice. Measure the juice rather than going by lime count, and taste before pouring — a few extra drops of simple syrup fixes it quickly.
  • The blender won’t crush the ice smoothly: Add the liquid ingredients first, then the strawberries, then the ice on top. This gives the blades something to work with at the start and prevents the ice from sitting dry on the bottom and stalling the motor.
  • The drink is too sweet: Strawberry sweetness varies by season. If yours are very ripe, start with a quarter ounce of simple syrup instead of a half ounce, then adjust after blending. Skip the garnish — not worth the extra dish — and just serve it straight.

Make-ahead notes

The blended drink doesn’t hold well — the ice melts and the texture goes flat within about 15 minutes of blending, so this one is best made to order. What you can do ahead is prep the liquid base: combine the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and simple syrup in a sealed jar and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to serve, pour the base into the blender, add the fresh strawberries and ice, and blend. For a party, salt the glass rims up to an hour in advance and keep the glasses in the freezer — the cold glass also helps the drink stay frosty longer once poured.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Margarita glass or coupe glass
  • Citrus Juicer
  • Small shallow plate (for salt rim)
  • Jigger or measuring cup

Ingredients

  • 2 floz silver/blanco tequila
  • ½ floz triple sec
  • ½ cup fresh strawberries hulled and halved
  • 1 floz fresh lime juice about 2 limes
  • ½ floz simple syrup 1:1 sugar to water
  • 1 cup ice
  • as needed coarse salt for rimming the glass

Instructions

  • Wet the rim of your Margarita or cocktail glass and then dip in salt to coat the rim of the glass with salt.
  • Add 1 cup of ice to your blender.
  • Add the tequila, triple sec, strawberries, lime juice, and simple syrup to the blender. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until completely smooth and slushy with no ice chunks remaining.
  • Pour into your salt-rimmed margarita or cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel on the rim or a fresh strawberry. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Make-ahead tip: Pre-measure the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and sugar syrup into a jar and refrigerate for up to 24 hours — just add strawberries and ice when ready to blend.
  • Batch it: Multiply all ingredients by your guest count, blend in batches of 4 servings maximum to keep the texture slushy and even.
  • Frozen strawberries work beautifully here and make the drink even icier — no need to add as much ice if using frozen berries.
  • For a virgin version, replace the tequila and triple sec with 3 floz of orange juice and an extra splash of lime.
  • Pro tip: Blend on high for a full 30-45 seconds until completely smooth — stopping too early leaves icy chunks that block your straw.

Common questions

Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh?

Yes, and in some cases frozen is actually the better choice. Frozen strawberries are picked at peak ripeness, so they tend to have more concentrated flavor than out-of-season fresh berries. Because they’re already frozen, you can reduce the added ice by about half — otherwise the drink can get too thick to pour.

Do I have to use a blender, or can I shake this like a regular margarita?

You need a blender for this specific recipe because the strawberries have to be fully broken down and the ice has to be crushed into a slush. Shaking would leave you with whole strawberry pieces and unbroken ice cubes. If you don’t have a blender, a different margarita style — one without fresh fruit — would work better for shaking.

What if I don’t want alcohol — can I make a non-alcoholic version?

Replace the tequila and triple sec with 3 ounces of orange juice and an extra squeeze of lime. The flavor profile shifts slightly since you lose the earthy backbone of the tequila, but the drink is still refreshing and genuinely good. Keep the salt rim — it still improves the flavor.

My blender isn’t very powerful. Will it still work?

A standard household blender will handle this, but you may need to let it run for the full 45 seconds rather than stopping at 30. If it struggles, try breaking the cup of ice into two additions — blend the first half with the liquid and fruit until smooth, then add the rest of the ice and blend again.

How do I scale this up for a group without it going wrong?

Multiply all the ingredients by the number of servings you need, but blend in batches of no more than four servings at a time. Overfilling the blender prevents the ice from circulating properly and you end up with an uneven texture — some parts slushy, some still chunky.
