Creamy, Fizzy, and Fun: The Colorado Bulldog Cocktail

The Colorado Bulldog is a White Russian with a splash of cola added at the end — that’s it. The cola cuts the richness of the cream and adds a little fizz, which makes the drink feel lighter than it looks. It takes five minutes and uses four ingredients, so it’s a genuinely easy option when you want something a little more interesting than a basic mixed drink.

What makes this version work

Two things matter here. First, shake the vodka and coffee liqueur with ice before building the drink — this chills them down fast and dilutes them just enough to keep the alcohol from overwhelming the cream. Second, add the cream directly to the glass rather than into the shaker. Pouring it over the back of a spoon slows it down and lets it layer through the drink instead of mixing in completely, which gives you a better texture in every sip. The cola goes in last and should be poured gently — a hard pour will kill the fizz before you even pick up the glass.

Storage and reheating

This drink doesn’t store. Once the cola goes in, the carbonation is gone within minutes and the cream will separate if it sits. If you’re making these for a group, you can shake the vodka and coffee liqueur with ice up to an hour ahead and strain into a pitcher kept in the fridge — then pour over fresh ice, add cream, and top with cola right before serving. That’s the only prep-ahead move that works here.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using warm ingredients: Room-temperature vodka or liqueur will melt your ice too fast and leave you with a watery drink. Keep both in the fridge or freezer before you start.
  • Skipping fresh ice in the glass: The ice you shook with is now wet and partially melted. Always strain into a glass with fresh ice so the drink stays cold longer without getting diluted immediately.
  • Pouring too much cola: A splash means a splash — roughly an ounce or so. Too much cola turns this into a soda with a hint of coffee rather than a creamy cocktail with a little fizz. Pour slowly and stop early.
  • Using diet cola: Diet cola has a sharper, more chemical sweetness that fights with the coffee liqueur. Regular cola, especially a cane sugar version, blends in without calling attention to itself. Skip the garnish — not worth the extra dish.
  • Over-shaking: Shake just until the outside of the shaker feels cold, about 10 to 15 seconds. Longer than that and you’re just adding excess water from the melting ice.

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • highball glass

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce vodka preferably a smooth, quality brand
  • 1 ounce coffee liqueur Kahlúa is a popular choice
  • 1 ounce heavy cream
  • 1 splash cola preferably cane sugar-sweetened for a richer taste
  • 1 handful ice cubes

Instructions

  • Fill a shaker with ice cubes and pour in 1 ounce (30 ml) each of vodka and coffee liqueur. Shake vigorously until well chilled, listening for the ice to rattle sharply, indicating it's properly chilled.
  • Strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice cubes, creating a rich, sepia tone in the glass.
  • Add 1 ounce (30 ml) of heavy cream to the glass. The cream should cascade through the drink, creating a marble effect.
  • Finally, top with a splash of cola, watching as it fizzes and melds with the other layers, giving a slight effervescence.

Notes

  • For those who prefer a less creamy drink, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
  • For added depth, try infusing your vodka with vanilla beans for a few days prior to making the cocktail.

FAQ

Can I use milk instead of heavy cream?

Yes, whole milk works but the drink will be noticeably thinner and less rich. Half-and-half is a better middle ground if you want something lighter than heavy cream but still creamy enough to layer properly.

What’s the best coffee liqueur to use if I don’t have Kahlúa?

Any coffee liqueur works — Tia Maria is a common alternative and runs a little drier and less sweet than Kahlúa. If your liqueur is on the sweeter side, you may want to go slightly lighter on the pour.

Do I have to use a cocktail shaker?

A shaker makes it easier to chill and strain cleanly, but you can stir the vodka and coffee liqueur over ice in the glass for about 20 seconds instead. You won’t get quite the same chill, but it works and saves washing an extra piece of equipment.

How strong is this drink?

With one ounce each of vodka and coffee liqueur, it’s a moderately strong single-serving cocktail — roughly comparable to a standard mixed drink. The cream and cola make it taste milder than it is, so it’s worth keeping the pours measured.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version?

Yes — use cold brew coffee concentrate in place of the vodka and coffee liqueur, then add cream and cola as written. It won’t taste identical, but it gives you the same creamy-fizzy combination without the alcohol.

What kind of glass do I need?

A highball glass is called for because the drink has several layers and you need the height for the cola fizz. A rocks glass or a large tumbler will also work fine — the drink just won’t have as much room for the cola.
