A hot toddy is whiskey, honey, lemon juice, and hot water in a mug — that’s it. It takes about ten minutes start to finish, uses things you likely already have, and is genuinely good on a cold night or when someone in the house is fighting a scratchy throat. No special equipment, no bartending skills required.

The technique that matters

The one step worth getting right is dissolving the honey before the water goes in. Add the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice to your mug first, then stir until the honey is fully liquid and no longer clinging to the bottom — this takes about 30 seconds. If you pour the hot water in before the honey dissolves, it sinks and sticks, and you end up with an uneven drink that’s sweet at the bottom and sharp at the top. Also, pour the boiling water slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the mug: it cools the water by a degree or two and prevents the glass from cracking if you’re using a thinner mug. That’s genuinely the whole technique.

Troubleshooting

  • Drink tastes harsh or boozy: The water wasn’t hot enough, or the ratio is off. Use a full rolling boil and measure your whiskey — 1.5 oz is about 3 tablespoons. More whiskey doesn’t make a better drink here.
  • Too sour: Lemon juice strength varies a lot depending on the fruit. Start with 2 teaspoons instead of a full tablespoon, taste, and add more if needed.
  • Too sweet: Reduce the honey to 1.5 teaspoons, or use a squeeze of extra lemon to cut through it. Some honeys are much sweeter than others.
  • Honey won’t dissolve: Your whiskey is too cold. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes, or give the honey a 5-second microwave in the mug before adding the other ingredients.
  • Drink cools down too fast: Warm your mug first by filling it with hot tap water, letting it sit for a minute, then dumping it out before you build the drink. A cold mug pulls heat out of the drink immediately.

Keeping and reheating

A hot toddy is best made fresh and drunk right away — it takes ten minutes, so there’s little reason to batch it ahead. That said, you can mix the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice together in a small jar and keep it in the fridge for up to three days; just add hot water when you’re ready. Skip the garnish — not worth the extra dish. If you’ve already made a full drink and want to reheat it, microwave it in 20-second bursts until steaming, but don’t let it boil or the alcohol will cook off and the flavor flattens. Don’t freeze it; there’s nothing here that benefits from freezing and the texture of the honey changes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water boiled
  • 1.5 oz whiskey preferably single malt Scotch or bourbon for richer flavor
  • 1 tbsp honey organic for optimum sweetness
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 pc cinnamon stick for stirring and garnish
  • 1 pc lemon slice for garnish
  • 1 pc clove optional, for extra spice

Instructions

  • Boil the water until it reaches a rolling boil, approximately 100°C (212°F).
  • In a heat-proof glass or mug, combine the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice. Stir gently until the honey has fully dissolved into the mixture.
  • Gently pour the boiled water into the glass over the back of a spoon to maintain the temperature without splashing, and stir with the cinnamon stick.
  • Garnish with a lemon slice and, if desired, a clove for a hint of spice. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

For a unique twist, try substituting maple syrup for honey to add a richer sweetness. Experiment with different whiskies to find your preferred balance of flavor and warmth.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a version without alcohol for kids or non-drinkers?

Yes — just leave out the whiskey and use hot water or weak chamomile tea as the base. The honey and lemon combination is genuinely soothing on its own, and a cinnamon stick in the mug makes it feel like a proper warm drink rather than an afterthought.

Does the type of whiskey actually matter?

It matters a little, but not as much as recipes suggest. A single malt Scotch gives a smokier, drier result; bourbon makes it sweeter and softer, which most people find more approachable. Use whatever you have open — a mid-range bottle is completely fine.

Can I use bottled lemon juice instead of fresh?

You can, and it works. Fresh lemon juice is brighter and a bit more tart, but bottled lemon juice in the same quantity produces a perfectly drinkable result, especially if you’re making this when you’re under the weather and don’t feel like squeezing citrus.

What kind of mug or glass should I use?

Use a thick ceramic mug or a heat-proof glass — a standard coffee mug is ideal. Thin glasses or regular drinking glasses can crack when you pour in boiling water, so avoid those unless you’re certain they’re heat-safe.
