This salad is smoked trout, thinly sliced cucumber, red onion, and fresh dill tossed in a tangy Greek yogurt dressing — no cooking, no special equipment, ready in 15 minutes. It’s the kind of thing you can pull together on a weeknight and it looks like you put in real effort. The flavors are clean and a little briny, and it works as a light lunch or a starter that won’t fill people up before the main.

What makes this version work

Two things matter here. First, slice the cucumber as thin as you can — ideally with a mandoline or a sharp knife and patience. Thick slices stay crunchy but don’t absorb the dressing; thin slices do both. Second, let the dressed salad sit for the full 5 minutes before serving. That short rest lets the salt in the dressing draw a little moisture from the cucumber, which loosens the yogurt slightly and helps everything coat evenly. Skip that rest and the dressing sits on top instead of pulling the whole bowl together. Everything else in this recipe is forgiving.

Substitutions that actually work

  • Smoked trout: Hot-smoked salmon works as a straight swap — same texture, slightly richer flavor. Cold-smoked salmon (lox) is softer and saltier, so use a little less and taste before adding extra salt to the dressing.
  • English cucumber: A regular garden cucumber works fine. Peel it and scoop out the seeds with a spoon first, or the salad gets watery fast.
  • Fresh dill: Dried dill is not a good substitute here — it tastes dusty and flat in a cold dish. If you can’t find fresh dill, fresh chives are a better fallback.
  • Full-fat Greek yogurt: Low-fat Greek yogurt will work but the dressing will be thinner and slightly more tart. Avoid plain regular yogurt — it’s too loose and the salad turns soupy.

Keeping and reheating

This salad is best eaten the day it’s made. If you need to prep ahead, store the dressing and the salad base separately in the fridge for up to 24 hours, then toss right before serving — the cucumber releases water over time and will make the dressing runny if they sit together too long. Once dressed, leftovers keep for about one day in a sealed container in the fridge; drain off any pooled liquid and give it a stir before eating. Do not freeze this — the cucumber turns soft and the yogurt separates.

If something goes sideways

  • The dressing tastes flat: Add a small squeeze of extra lemon juice and a pinch more salt, then taste again. Smoked trout is already salty, so the dressing needs enough acid to cut through it — this is the most common fix needed.
  • The salad is watery by the time you serve it: The cucumber released moisture too early. Next time, slice the cucumber, toss it with a pinch of salt, and let it sit in a colander for 10 minutes before building the salad — this draws out excess water before the dressing goes on. Skip the garnish of extra dill on top — not worth the extra dish.
  • The trout broke into tiny crumbles instead of flakes: It was probably over-handled. Add the trout last, after the dressing is already on the cucumber and onion, and fold it in gently with a spoon rather than tossing.
  • The garlic taste is too sharp: Raw garlic can be aggressive in a cold dish. Next time, let the minced garlic sit in the lemon juice for 2 minutes before whisking in the yogurt — the acid mellows it out noticeably.
  • The red onion is too pungent: Soak the sliced onion in cold water for 5 minutes, then drain and pat dry before adding it. This takes the sharp edge off without losing the flavor entirely.

  • If you prefer a lighter dressing, substitute half the Greek yogurt with sour cream.

Common questions

Can I use canned fish instead of smoked trout?

Canned smoked trout works and is easy to find in most grocery stores near the canned tuna. Drain it well and pat it dry with a paper towel before adding it, otherwise the liquid from the can will thin out the dressing.

Do I need a mandoline to slice the cucumber?

No — a sharp chef’s knife works fine. Aim for slices about 2–3mm thick, which is roughly the thickness of a coin. Go slowly and keep the slices consistent so they dress evenly.

How do I know if my smoked trout is already cooked?

Hot-smoked trout (the most common kind sold in vacuum packs at the grocery store) is fully cooked and ready to eat straight from the package. It will be opaque and flake easily — if it looks translucent and silky like lox, it’s cold-smoked, which is also safe to eat but has a different texture.

Can I make this salad dairy-free?

Yes — a thick, unsweetened coconut yogurt or a plain cashew-based yogurt can replace the Greek yogurt in the dressing. Taste the dressing before adding it to the salad, since dairy-free yogurts vary a lot in tartness and you may need to adjust the lemon juice.

What should I serve this with to make it a full meal?

Rye crackers or dense rye bread are the most practical choice — they hold up to the creamy dressing without going soggy immediately. A few slices of buttered sourdough also work well if rye bread isn’t available.
